Joke Raes

Visual Artist

Joke Raes is a Belgian visual artist known for her versatile and intricately detailed works. She creates drawings, sculptures, and installations that are characterized by an organic visual language, often inspired by the rampant forces of nature, the duality of existence, or imaginary journeys. Her work reflects a deep fascination with surfaces and what lies beneath them, with every detail meticulously crafted.

Raes’ oeuvre is imbued with natural forms such as roots, flowers, and seeds, through which she expresses a unique symbiosis between nature and culture. Her art invites viewers to construct their own narratives within the clear structures she creates. Themes such as inside and outside, mirror images, and the balance between filling and enclosure frequently recur in her work.

Through her curiosity for nature and her uniquely detailed approach, Raes creates artworks that not only captivate but also offer a philosophical perspective on our relationship with the world around us.

Joke Raes is an internationally acclaimed artist from Belgium who won the Art Prize at Ceramic Brussels in 2024. This achievement earned her a two-month artist residency at Fondation L’Accolade in Paris. In 2016, she completed her postgraduate studies at HISK (Higher Institute for Fine Arts) in Ghent. Her journey in the visual arts began with extraordinary projects, including an underwater exhibition in the Red Sea and a residency with indigenous communities deep in the Peruvian Amazon. These transformative experiences have profoundly influenced her artistic practice, inspiring a visual language rooted in the complexity and diversity of nature and humanity.

Joke Raes works with a wide range of media and materials, including drawings, watercolors, performance, ceramics, industrial remnants, installations, and sculptures. Her work explores themes such as the duality of identity, the fragility and beauty of existence, tension and balance within imagery, the act of appearing and disappearing, imaginary journeys, and participatory projects like collecting “love water.” This involves gathering water from rivers, lakes, and seas worldwide, which she then incorporates into her creations, such as fountains or love-themed watercolor drawings. Her organic visual language, reminiscent of the lush structures of the Amazon rainforest, combines fluid movement with obsessive attention to detail. While her works appear spontaneous, closer inspection reveals astonishing precision.

Raes developed her ceramic practice during residencies at Sundaymorning@EKWC in the Netherlands and in Arita, Saga, Japan. In 2017, she initiated her ongoing porcelain mask series, Mask x, reflecting both her theatrical background and her thoughts on fluid identity. Each mask is given a unique name and identity by its purchaser, embodying the ambiguity and fragility of identity and the tension between concealment and revelation.

Her artist residencies in the Amazon rainforest in Peru and near the Red Sea in Egypt have contributed to the dynamic quality of her imagery. She has exhibited her work worldwide, including in Belgium, the Netherlands, Russia, Japan, and Peru. Notable projects include her first major public space commission for the General Hospital Alma in Eeklo, a residency at sundaymorning@ekwc in the Netherlands, and a permanent outdoor sculpture at CC Destelheide, a performance in the Vanhaerents Art Collection, and selection for Coming People at SMAK. Her work has been showcased in prestigious galleries and exhibitions over the past years, and she continues to engage in new projects, including participation in the Bruges Triennale and a solo exhibition in the Japanese Garden for Ensor ’24. Recently, Joke Raes won the Ceramics Brussels Prize and will spend two months creating in Paris. More about her work can be found on her website.

Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including at SMAK Coming People BE (’11), the Amazon Forest PER (’12), the Red Sea EGY (’12), Vanhaerents Art Collection BE (’13), the Moscow Biennale for Contemporary Art RUS (’15), Az Alma BE (’17), Van Abbemuseum NL (’18), the Belgian Embassy in Tokyo and Kyoto Art Center JP (’18), Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens BE (’19), CC Destelheide BE (’19), The White House Gallery BE (’19), Poortersloge BE (’20), DMW Gallery BE (’21), Franzis Engels Gallery NL (’22), D’Apostrof BE (’23), Verduyn Gallery BE (’23), Galerie P BE (’24), Kunstenhuis Harelbeke BE (’24), her solo exhibition Wandermask in the Japanese Garden in Ostend for the Ensor Year, and the Triennale Brugge CC Brugge BE (’24).

In 2025, Raes will publish her first monograph, be named Artist of the Year at Zebra Ghent, and serve as resident artist at CC Bruges.
