Stéphanie Leblon

Visual Artist

Stéphanie Leblon’s work is full of movement. For her paintings she starts from photos that she takes herself. Such a photo – with up and down movements – is a guideline for her, a source of inspiration. Nothing anymore. “I’m starting from a plan, a concept. But I rarely follow it ”, she says about it. “It’s not about a fill-in-the-blank exercise. The paint has to live. ”

She achieves this movement, or at least our optical experience of movement – the illusion of dynamics – through a play of sharpness and blur in her paintings. She increases that dynamic aspect by making her brush strokes and paint strokes go in different directions, so that our gaze has no focus but, on the contrary, moves restlessly back and forth over the surface of the canvas.

Lives and works in Ghent (°1970)

She obtained a Master’s degree in Monumental Art/Painting at the Sint-Lukas Hogeschool in Ghent, and a Postgraduate at the Higher Institute of Fine Arts (HISK) in Belgium.

Stéphanie Leblon is a visual artist who fully embraces the power of abstraction and intuition in her work. Her paintings are infused with movement and dynamism, as she instinctively approaches the canvas to create a world that appears to be in constant flux. Each piece invites the viewer to delve into its depth—not merely to observe but to truly feel and explore.

Leblon’s brushstrokes follow no predetermined path. Her process is an intuitive interplay of color, texture, and layering, where every element in her compositions seems to be in motion. The tension between what is revealed and what remains hidden creates an intriguing dialogue between the tangible and the elusive. This compels the viewer to look beyond the surface and surrender to the profound depth of her work.

As Leblon once expressed: “I don’t paint what I see; I paint what I feel. For me, painting is a way to give space to the unspoken.” Her works are not merely images but experiences—moments where the intuitive and the abstract converge, reflecting the very movement of life itself.

The subtlety of the proliferation

For the new Growflow exhibition in 2023, Stéphanie Leblon is expanding her artistic journey with sculptures, a successful new path to the third dimension. Her previous work in painting has always embodied the power of natural growth, but with the addition of sculpture to her repertoire, she brings older themes to life in surprising ways. Her sculptures penetrate the space and capture the light in a way that her paintings never could before. “Ulvado,” they say, is the uncontrolled, the unchecked, the wilderness that dictates itself. It is the power that fearlessly breaks through barriers, that produces life in its purest form. However, in Leblon’s artistic universe, proliferation takes a different form. She redefines this power, tames it into a form of sublime elegance, where the usually uncontrollable is domesticated and channeled into a subtle mastery. In her paintings, lines and shapes flow together in an organic way, while her sculptures become almost literal expressions of growth and movement. Yet she maintains subtlety both in the texture of the paint and in the sculpted lines of her sculptures. Growflow’s works demonstrate Stephanie’s deep understanding of the natural world and her ability to capture both abundant growth and delicate finesse in one composition. That subtle finesse reveals itself as a silence amid the tumult of nature. Her brushstroke is not rough, but rather a caress of the elements, a delicate weaving of lines and textures. It is as if she picks up the whispers of nature and translates them into a visual language that invites us to introspection. Her art connects us to the secret rhythms of growth and decay that would otherwise escape our attention. Symphonies of subtlety Leblon’s works are like symphonies of subtlety, where the notes of nature are played with unparalleled precision. She seems to understand what Marcel Proust once said: “The real discovery does not consist in seeking new landscapes, but in seeing with new eyes.” In her oeuvre we discover the beauty in the details, the subtlety of the simplicity, and we look at the world around us with new eyes. At the same time, we realize that this contrast between proliferation and subtlety is a metaphor for human existence itself. In the apparent chaos of our lives, in the busyness of our thoughts, there is often a deep underlying harmony that we can only appreciate if we take the time to look. Leblon’s art calls us to do just that, to discover the deeper meaning that lies beneath the surface of the everyday world. Her works invite us to slow down, to open our senses to the world around us, and to embrace the subtlety of life. Because in that subtlety we find beauty, in the proliferation we discover order, and in the chaos hidden patterns reveal themselves. Then enjoy Stephanies Leblons Growflow with the new eyes of Marcel Proust.
