Thibo Moreels

Thibo Moreels (b. 1986, Tielt, Belgium) is a self-taught artist whose work moves between the boundaries of painting and sculpture, grounded in an instinctive engagement with materiality. Mining domestic detritus—attics, thrift stores, and garages—Moreels repurposes objets trouvés into compositions that blend irony with romance. His precise and subversive sensibility transforms familiar objects, reframing the ordinary as a site of alchemy and reinvention.

Informed by the sublime aesthetics of the Hudson River School and a spirit of experimentation, coincidence plays a crucial role in Moreels’ studio process. He describes his works as a “symbiosis of mutualism,” where an object’s latent yearning finds fulfillment through unexpected juxtapositions and interactions. Similarly to the themes explored in A Rose is a Rose is a Rose, his works ask viewers to make their own connections, immersing them in the autonomy of an otherworldly imagined narrative.

Moreels has notably exhibited at Frock Gallery, and collaborated with designer Oskar Zieta.

After Lucas Devriendt taught him at LUCA Ghent, he further developed self-taught in different disciplines: drawing, painting and creating intriguing sculptures. His work has great variety and duality, which is also typical of his personality; contrasting, colorful, mysterious and dreamy. Alternating between painting and sculptural work, helps him to look at his creations with an innovative fresh look each time, reflecting and evolving and searching for new ideas.

He is more interested in communication than committing to a single discipline. Ideas present themselves in different vessels, Thibo is open to materializing them in any form. His studio houses a number of experimental constructions and unusual materials. His sculptures are mainly collages and assemblages of found objects that are full of contrasting associations. Meanwhile, his paintings contain the same thoughtful ironies. They seem like small versions of the epic Hudson River School paintings of the Sublime and Romantic movements. And just like the found objects, his small paintings, in combination, make their own unusual connections and associations.

Moreels showed his work in several exhibitions in Belgium such as Confrontations at Merelbeke, a duo show with Oskar Zieta at Frock gallery, Galerie P, Pre- Triennale Brugge, Aqualex, Zebra Gent or Salon de Leon. Thibo Moreels won the young makers prize. In 2025 he was invited to exhibit at the Poortersloge CC Brugge, a duo expo at Galerie P and the Kunstenhuis in Harelbeke.
