Hilde Van de Walle

“For me, sculpting is both a physical and emotional process, in which the material shows the way.

It is a constant search for balance between strength and vulnerability. The strength is expressed in spirited, direct movements with the material — clay, plaster. The vulnerability is revealed in subtle accents: a modest posture, or the deliberate omission of certain parts of the sculpture.

How I shape the material is a direct response to what I feel and want to express.

Sometimes I take a step back — literally and figuratively — to observe, read and feel my sculpture. These moments of contemplation are not pauses, but essential conversations with the work.

The critical gaze tells me what the sculpture already says and what it still needs: an addition, a reworking, or perhaps an omission.

In this way, a deep connection with the work develops.

A process in which I slowly make the intangible tangible.”

Lives and works in Zottegem (Velzeke), Belgium.

She received her higher education at LUCA School of Arts, Ghent. She then went on to study graphic design and ceramics at SABK. She worked as a lecturer in visual design at Artevelde University College in Ghent.

Her visual work includes sculptures in bronze and composite, ranging from small and intimate to monumental.

She constructs the sculptures, mostly human figures, with plaster on steel frames, which she then moulds and casts in bronze or composite.

Van de Walle’s sculptures are a “still”, a frozen moment of movement. In this way, she challenges the viewer to think about the preceding or following actions.

The understated charisma of her sculptures invites dialogue with the viewer and the environment. Hilde does not consider the spaces around and between the sculptures to be empty, but rather a sounding board that resonates with the intangible.

Her sculptures and installations can be seen in many public places, squares and roundabouts such as Brecht 2024, Oud-Heverlee 2024, Vilvoorde 2022, Westmalle 2021, Wichelen 2021, Machelen (Vl.Br) 2017, Houthulst 2011, Ghent 2009, Venlo (NL) 2007, Eke-Nazareth 2006, Herk-de-Stad 2005, Steendorp 2002, Schoten 2000.
