Eva Rossie

Visual artist

Eva Rossie studied photography at the Academy of Fine Arts Anderlecht and art history at the University of Ghent. She has also seen the world thanks to her job as a professional model. These experiences give her an eye for beauty, a knack for getting along with just about anyone, and a sense of how it is to be subjected to the camera’s lens. She knows what it is like to feel vulnerable. As a human, as a woman. But in this vulnerability, she finds elegance.

She has worked closely with some of the best photographers in the world, both as a model and as a photographer’s assistant. Think projects from Japan to the USA, and from fashion to documentary. These diverse ventures have provided Eva Rossie with an extensive skill set, and with the ability to approach images from different points of view.

Eva Rossie is an advocate for the worth of all humans. Everyone, no matter gender or age, should be able to feel sensual and desired. Eva Rossie’s female gaze naturally delivers a refreshing perspective. Your personal captivating allure emerges in her pictures – on your terms. Eva Rossie helps you feel comfortable, and in turn she helps your sense of sensuality feel natural.

Les (Dés)Habilleuses, in cooperation with Uitgeverij Stichting Kunstboek – Laarne Castle (Kasteel Van Laarne), Laarne

For Les (Dés)Habilleuses, photographer Eva Rossie was inspired by gender roles and Laarne Castle. The former inhabitants of the castle are visually explored, room by room, through her own lens of the female gaze. The dresser is the main character. Because of her rather intimate position, she used to hear and see everything. There lies a contradiction within the dresser; she was like a panoptic security camera, but she found herself in a vulnerable position at the same time. Rossie plays with the disparity between those who cover and reveal, those who see and hear everything, those who are kept small, and those who refuse the confinement of their shackles. Rossie’s characters invite a contemporary view on gender, without losing sight of history, since it is precisely what has been that serves as a starting point in the search for an alternative, contemporary view of what people can be. Presented to you are layered pictures like film stills with a vulnerable edge.
