Gery De Smet

Visual artist

Gery De Smet works in his painting like an archivist or an archaeologist, who is always looking for what binds people or what divides them. It is therefore not surprising that the paintings, which he often makes in series, lean on man’s irrepressible need for folklore, heroism, nationalism and (self) deceit. De Smet works on themes such as deception, manipulation, propaganda and ideology, always with an ironic or sardonic twist.

Gery De Smet (1961, Merksem) studied painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Gent and HISK. In 1992 he won the Young Belgian Painting Prize. The artist lives and works in St.-Amandsberg (Gent) and explores other media in addition to his main discipline.

1984-1988: Painting – KASK Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Gent
1988-1993: Painting – HISK, Antwerpen
1992: Winner of the Young Belgian Painting Prize
