Jonas Callaert

Visual artist

Jonas Callaert conducts a painterly research where the act of painting itself and the history of the medium are utmost important.

He captures his environment through photography and uses this as a starting point. Afterwards, painting takes over. Color studies and deconstructing the painting shape the studio. This is the breeding ground where the works enter into dialogue with each other. Through this working method, one work gives rise to another with the choice to go along with it or to do something radically against it.

Jonas Callaert (°1988) conducts a painterly research where the act of painting itself and the history of the medium are utmost important.

Two excerpts from the book ‘Denken over kunst. Een inleiding in de kunstfilosofie’ by Antoon Van den Braembussche are closely in line with the thinking of Jonas Callaert:

“The painter does not create ex nihilo, but is determined in his creative expression by the visible world itself, by his own history as a painter and the history of painting itself. This visual and historical consciousness, however, condenses in its activity of the moment and takes on the character of an ‘eternal now’, a ‘provisional eternity’. His activity takes place in a ‘now’, in which he compresses the past, without being aware of it.”

“Of extraordinary importance is the margin, the white on the edge of the pages between the lines and the words. There is a curious paradox: that which is actually meaningless – because there is nothing there – gives meaning to what is there. In this respect, the unsaid, the unthought, the forgotten and the excluded make each text what it is.”
